DARKER THINGS, a brilliant beginning to a #DarkFantasy Series #ASMSG

DARKER THINGS
The Lockman Chronicles Book One
 by Rob Cornell

Find Darker Things on Amazon: http://smarturl.it/DarkerThings

THE BLURB:

Craig Lockman...

No one had called him that in fifteen years.

Not since his days at the Agency. Not since he was trained to kill creatures that were supposed to exist only in nightmares.

Yet the teenage girl on his doorstep not only knows his real name, she claims she's his daughter.

Before Lockman can learn how the girl found him, he's attacked by a black-ops team of assassins. But these aren't ordinary killers--they're heavily armed vampires sent by his most hated enemy.

Forced on the run, Lockman protects his daughter from an onslaught of horrors while searching for who betrayed him and why. The investigation leads him to Detroit, where he unwittingly sets a plan into motion that could trigger a paranormal apocalypse and cost him his soul.

Darker Things presents a new breed of urban fantasy, paced like a thriller and filled with gritty action. "Imagine if James Patterson wrote about vampires." -- Will Entrekin, author of The Prodigal Hour.

THE REVIEW:  ★★★★★

Craig Lockman is a man with a dark wicked past he thought he'd left behind. When the daughter he never knew existed comes knocking, she unwittingly brings the darkness straight to his doorstep.

The race for survival is on. Craig must figure out who gave up his location and why, while trying to protect his trouble-making daughter from the marauding vampires, werewolves and other nasties that are hunting them both. Lockman's nemesis wants him alive, and he has powerful supernatural allies to ensure he gets his man.

This is a fast-paced dark urban fantasy thriller filled with paranormal suspense and in-your-face action sequences. Lockman must balance his violent tendencies and badassary with this new strange dynamic in his life, his growing love for his daughter.

Reminiscent of Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, and all my old-school horror favorites, Darker Things is a phenomenal start to a dark fiction series. I'm looking forward to reading the next installment, Dark Legion, Book 2 in the Lockman Chronicles.

MOTH by Sean Poindexter ~ A dark, wicked, and gritty #UrbanFantasy #Review #ASMSG

THE REVIEW:

Max, CPS investigator, is on the trail of several mysterious child disappearances. Max digs through trailer trash hovels, neo-nazi meth dealers, and every form of Deliverance-backwater scum you can find rotting in a 1970's singlewide. The search for these phantom missing children seems to dead end every which way ... the parents can't remember they ever had children.

Its the memory blackout that proves who's behind these heinous crimes. Damn vampires are at it again, erasing minds, stealing children and selling them off to vampire truckers and pedophiles.

This is every CPS worker's nightmare case, and no one in the department can handle it, except Max. He's immune to vampire glamour, sees right through their bullshit. Forced into a deadly alliance with rival vampires, Max plays supernatural politics to his advantage and brings down the hammer of retribution.

I'll never be able to look at a trailer park the same way again.

Moth delves into the darkest depths of child exploitation in America, while seamlessly blending in a hidden underworld of supernatural nasties. An intense genre-bender of urban fantasy, horror, thriller, mystery-suspense, with a splatter of steamy, erotica.

Definitely my kind of novel, a SOLID FIVE STAR READ ★★★★★

THE BLURB:

Social worker Max Hollingsworth is no stranger to monsters. Supernatural or human, he's faced all kinds. But when he's called upon to investigate a missing child, he may have met his match.

Children are vanishing, not just from the streets, but from their parents' memories. Max's investigation leads him to a gang of neo-Nazi vampires running a child slavery ring. There, he comes face to face with the deadliest enemy he's ever met, their charismatic and powerful leader Boone.

Running low on hope and options to find the missing children, Max turns to his friends for help. But even they aren't enough. Forced to face the darkness of his own past, Max forges an alliance with the least likely ally of all. An enemy whose cruelty was almost his end, and haunts him still.

Excerpt from Moth - Chapter 1
Chapter One
“Don’t you usually come in pairs?”
Officer Unruh smiled and nodded. “Yes, sir.”
Max grinned. “You just get out?”
“Yes, sir. US Marines.”
“Ah…yeah, I recognize the haircut.” It wasn’t just that. Max stood a foot over him at six feet, but the patrolman made up for it with broad arms and a big chest. He didn’t look like he needed a partner. And then there was this “sir” business…
“Have you been doing this long?”
“I’ve been with the Joplin PD for five months. And you?”
Max drummed his fingers on the bag hanging from his shoulder. “I’ve been a social worker long enough to know which house on this street we’re going to, even without looking at the numbers.” It was the one without siding, just bare insulation boards nailed to the outer wall.
“Yes, sir.”
Max didn’t resent Unruh’s presence; he just didn’t think it was necessary. He’d taken cops with him lots of times, and on a few of those instances, it turned out he’d needed them. But Brian insisted the workers take cops with them anytime an allegation of drugs was involved in a hotline. It irritated him for a number of reasons, not the least of which happened to be that Brian’s job used to be his.
That was another story…
The lawn was overgrown and the wooden porch sagged, but they arrived at the door without incident. Max knew the drill. The burly young policeman stepped to the side of the locked screen door and knocked. A few seconds later, an interior door opened and a man’s face appeared behind the filthy fly screen. Max had been expecting a woman.
“Is Donna here?” The man looked at Max with bulging, bloodshot eyes that darted back to the cop as though expecting a friendlier face. Whatever look Unruh gave, it wasn’t what he’d hoped. He returned to Max, who repeated the question.
“She’s not here.”
It was eight thirty in the morning, so if she worked she might have been there. Max didn’t have employer information for the mother. Also, he kind of doubted she had a job.
Unruh rattled the latch a bit, but it didn’t budge. “Sir, could you unlock the door please?”
“What’s this about?”
Max stepped to the screen and held up his plastic ID badge. It said Max Hollingsworth in big letters under a rather unflattering picture of him. The bulging-eyed man looked at the ID then back up at Max. He looked surprised. He shouldn’t have been.
“Sir,” repeated Unruh, “Could you unlock the door please?”
He looked back to Unruh and nodded. After a click, the door swung open. Max and the patrolman entered the home.
The look on Unruh’s face implied disgust. Max grinned, he really hadn’t been doing this long. The home was a mess, but Max had seen worse—far worse. In a very short time, so would Unruh. Places like this would become normal for him. Max remembered when this kind of mess would have bothered him, too.
The term “shithole” was tossed around so much, but it wasn’t that bad. The awkwardly rectangular living room smelled like dog and had a few plastic microwave food boats piled on an old coffee table. Despite the smell, there was no dog in sight. The most expensive piece of furniture in the room, probably the house, was a flat screen television. It was paused on an image of a video console football game. The wireless controller rested on a ratty couch covered by a slightly less ratty blanket.
“Donna’s sleeping—”
“You said Donna wasn’t here.” Max glanced over his shoulder. The man wore dirty grey boxer shorts and a plaid robe. He’d forgone the courtesy of a shirt, so his guests were treated to ribs poking through the mole-speckled, pasty skin of a man who rarely left the house.
“Yeah,” he replied with a dirty chuckle. “I saw the cop and said that.” He looked at Unruh like he thought the cop would be amused. The cop was not, so he looked away.
Max produced a small notebook and pen from the bag hanging at his side. “Who are you?”
“I’m Jim…I live with Donna.”
“You sleep on the couch?” He gestured to it. Jim shook his head.
“Only in the day.”
Must be nice, Max thought, sleeping in the day. “You work nights, then?” Max had perfected the art of over-tact, being a complete dick without getting punched. The people he dealt with didn’t tend to get subtlety. Unruh’s grin showed he got it—the cops usually did. They both knew the answer already.
“Naw, I’m what you’d call unemployed.”
He thought about asking him to elaborate: What exactly do you mean by, unemployed, sir? But that might be overdoing it. White trash will only tolerate so much subtle condescension.
“Would you call Donna unemployed?” Max asked, after collecting pedigree information; Jim’s last name, date of birth, social security number. Max was always surprised when people gave all that to him, especially the social security number.
“No, she works at Macey’s.” That was not to be confused with Macy’s, the retail giant. Macey’s was a chain of convenience stores/gas stations. Joplin had ninety of them or something.
“Is Madolla in her room?”
“No, she sleeps downstairs.”
Max crooked an eye. “Donna or Madolla?”
“Madolla. She’s around the corner, in the kitchen.”
Max stopped writing. “The baby sleeps in the kitchen?” He looked at the entrance to the dining room. Presumably the kitchen was beyond that, behind the stairs.
“The baby keeps us up if she’s in the room.”
“Yeah, they’ll do that.”
Max walked around the corner. The stairs were wooden and covered with peeling brown paint. A few of them were cracked. They ended in a carpeted second floor. The dining room lacked a table, and the kitchen beyond was full of dirty dishes and flies. A few feet from a neglected refrigerator sat a playpen, apparently doing double-duty as a baby bed.
“Let me get Donna’s ass out of bed…”
Unruh stepped in from of Jim as he tried to leave.
“Not just yet.” Max approached the pen. Jim followed, but Unruh stopped him at the dining room entrance.
“I think Donna should be here, I can’t just let anyone see her kid you know—”
“I’m not ‘just anyone’...I work for the State.”
“She’s sleeping.” He seemed to be gauging his chances of darting past Unruh without being tackled…or perhaps his odds of survival if it occurred. He chose the prudent path. “If you wake her up, Donna’ll be pissed. She cries a lot.”
“They’ll do that, too.”
“She was crying for like, hours last night.”
Aside from the slight dirty-diaper smell, Madolla and her pen were clean and well taken care of. The report said she was six months old, but she looked like a newborn. She was lying on her belly, still and peaceful. Max started to smile…
“She was bawling all night, until about four this morning.”
“When was the last time you or Donna checked her?” Max lowered his hand into the pen and pressed his fingers to her little scalp.
“Checked her?”
“To see why she was crying.”
“I turned up the TV and she cried herself out.”
“When?”
“When what?”
“When did she stop crying?”
Jim scratched his scalp through greasy brown hair. “Like three or something. It usually takes longer.”
Max withdrew his hand from the pen and wrote all that down. The tap of pen on paper competed evenly with the soft hum of the refrigerator condenser.
“Officer Unruh, can you call an ambulance please?”
Jim’s eyes widened. “Ambulance?”
Unruh didn’t ask any questions. The distraught look on his face showed he didn’t need to. Unruh stepped away from Jim to the living room and pressed the button on his shoulder communicator.
“Oh, shit… Should I wake Donna?” Jim stepped closer to Max so he didn’t interrupt the stream of ambulance-summoning cop jargon.
“That would be a good idea,” Max kept his voice as flat as possible, but under the circumstances his bile filter was a little taxed.
“Shit! What do I tell her? Is Madolla okay?”
Max turned his eyes to the pen.
“She’s dead.”

THE BONE CHURCH, a dark, sophisticated #thriller #Review #ASMSG

When long-time author friend Victoria Dougherty offered review copies of her debut novel The Bone Church, a historical WWII thriller, I said, "Over here please!"

Vic and I have chatted of many things, and found common ground in our love of Allen Furst, whose novel Red Gold was one of my research sources for my own writings on WWII Paris. If you've seen Victoria's phenomenal blog COLD, you'd know right away, this is an author well worth your time when she finally released her first book (and hopefully soon a second).

A sophisticated thriller, The Bone Church, did not disappoint.

Fans of Allen Furst, gather round, here's the new girl on the block - and she can write. Victoria Dougherty weaves a complex tale of one of the darkest periods of European history, birthed from the unsung stories of wartime Prague and post-war Prague. The author's Czech heritage shines brilliantly in this powerful story of the underground rebellion, of men and women struggling to survive and shove a wrench in Hitler's plans, any way possible.

Jumping through time from the height of the German occupation of Prague to the great communist decline post-war, The Bone Church brings us a perilous account of pure duplicity. Treacherous secrecy, double deals, double agents, Nazi sympathizers, Catholic revolutionaries, thieves, gypsies, and survival by subterfuge. No one is what they seem, and their alliances are as double-edged as the knives they stab in everyone's backs.

Yet, within this dark, twisted novel is another story of forbidden love with a Jewish woman marked for death. Postwar communist Prague brings no respite for our Jewish heroine.

Identities and residences are changed more often than clothing.

The intricate weave of events and time slipping back and forth carries the reader through to the promise of hope, and the sublime synchronicity of the secrets resting beneath the consecrated bones of The Bone Church.

A solid five star read. ★★★★★

Take a tour of THE BONE CHURCH with @VicDougherty #Espionage #Thriller #ASMSG

REBLOGGED via Victoria Dougherty:

The Bone Church: Real and Imagined

bone church exteriorThe Ossuary at Sedlec – or Bone Church of Kutna Hora as it’s more commonly known – is a relatively plain church from the exterior. At least as far as Old World European standards go. It sits about an hour outside of Prague in the Czech Republic, and last time I was there, some ten years ago, it was still a dingy mustard color on the outside.
In fairness, most ossuaries are just church basements filled with neatly piled up human bones, so there typically isn’t anything out of the ordinary about the actual structure it’s housed in. There’s no electrically powered Grim Reaper standing with a scythe a chuckling a deep MWAAHHAAHAAA, the way there is at any self-respecting haunted house.
In fact, the only feature that advertised that there just might be more than meets the eye to The Bone Church of Kutna Hora was the skull and crossbones spiked at the top of its spire – right where you’d usually see a crucifix.
Otherwise, the place just sat there like Boris Karloff without make-up.
bone head
When I visited on a gloomy October day in 2004, dragging my 20 month-old son and a prehistoric digital camera with me, I thought I would have to muscle my way through a throng of tourists.
But we were alone there.
Suitably, the only sounds we could hear were my own boot heels clicking on the stone tiles as we entered the foyer, the wheels of my son’s dilapidated MacLaren stroller and the whistle of a fall wind – the kind that blows tufts of dead leaves in a swirl. Some of those, mostly a fresh cluster of fiery orange oaks, blew with us into the Bone Church. A young man, very pale and black haired with a warm smile and crooked teeth, greeted us.
It should have been eerie, but it was exquisite.
A short staircase – also stone – led us down into the chamber, where an enormous chandelier lorded over the place. It was fashioned entirely of human bone – utilizing every bone in the human body, the young man told us in his hushed, churchy voice. The skulls would have held candles, I suppose, but the chandelier was unlit. In fact, the only light in the Bone Church came from the outside through a few kidney-shaped Gothic windows.
There were urns made primarily of femurs, a bone Coat of Arms belonging to the Schwarzenberg family, an endless garland (skull-vertebrae-vertebrae-knee cap, skull-tibia-skull-tibia) strung loosely along the trim like it was Christmas and several pyramids constructed of bones – ones that sat in iron-barred enclaves like slayed prisoners.bone church chandelier
My son and I stood there absorbing the sheer magnitude of death around us. People who’d died of flu, arsenic poisoning, small pox, swords thrust into their rib cage, a heart-attack, a mallet to the temple, infection, childbirth, trampling, a broken heart.
The bones of some 30,000 Christians beautified this stark, chapel-like holy chamber – prominent and presumably pious Christians who had been promised burial in the Church of All Saints cemetery. But due to a string of plagues and wars, had found themselves without a place to land after they blew their last breath.
bone church 6
It occurred to me this strange permanent installation of sacred art – the devil’s art, some called it – was actually a clever solution to a very sensitive dilemma. Church teachings, after all, forbade cremation. And the poor souls who had counted on burial in the Church of All Saints holy cemetery had paid considerable tithes to earn their way into some kind of dignified and noble entombment.
And what could be more noble than the care and inspired vision required to create such a communal, yet deeply personal way to honor the departed? To me, it was the ultimate expression of both grief and hope.
cherub bone church
My little son – and my first and most tender reminder of my own mortality – was getting restless and hungry, so I snapped a couple of pictures and we left.
But The Bone Church stayed with me and made its way into a story I’d begun writing.

FLIRT by Laurell K. Hamilton ~ A Candid Review #UrbanFantasy #ASMSG

Flirt is one of the later installments of Laurell K. Hamilton's ANITA BLAKE VAMPIRE HUNTER Series.  I have not read them all from the beginning, but I have read numerous books, the last five novels leading up to this one, and I really enjoyed them.

A note on the cover art:  Only NY Times bestselling authors can get away with shitty, ambiguous cover art on an erotic urban fantasy novel.  Nobody looking at this cover would have the first clue what the hell kind of book this is or what genre it is.  This cover is a testament to the fact that everyone already knows Laurell K. Hamilton's name, and her publisher would rather ride on that name than invest in a decent cover.

Now, if you're a fan of this series or Laurell K. Hamilton, you already know that the later novels in the series, particularly this novel and others following it, are seeing a lot of critical backlash.  The star of the show, Anita Blake, has gotten herself into a predicament in the series.  She is psychically tied into a large crowd of vampires and various weres, is a carrier of numerous kinds of lycanthropy (but doesn't actually change), and is the only living necromancer the vampires haven't managed to kill off.  But, she's still human, more or less.

Sounds pretty interesting right? (Only if you're sick in the head like me)

The catch:  Anita is the epicenter of everything around her.  She has gobs of power flowing to her night and day from this massive gang she is psychically tied to, and, because of the nature of her vampire master, Jean-Claude, Anita is also a succubus, who feeds from sex, via a unique kind of power called the ardeur.  Anita needs to feed from sex regularly, to keep herself and gang flowing along with sufficient power levels.  No Food = Death.  She would first kill off a vampire and were slaved to her life-force before she died.

So, long complicated-erotic-story short: she must have sex, a lot, and often its orgy style.  Not kidding.  Some of these books have Anita taking on several dudes at once.  Very interesting mechanics, but not for the faint of heart.

This series is perhaps becoming too complex.  I am not the first person to say that.  Many a fan who loved this series has turned on it in a blinding rage and written scathing reviews.

I had mixed emotions about  the beginning of this book.  Its a setting where Anita is hanging with the THREE men she lives with (only a fraction of all the men she has sex with on a weekly basis), they are in a restaurant, chatting it up, flirting with a waiter.  Seems too innocuous, heading into the boring zone.  I was scratching my head, wondering what the hell is this scene doing in the Anita Blake series I know and love?

Then Anita gets kidnapped, in the same restaurant, a few days later, and it starts tying together and making sense.

Laurell K. Hamilton is a very skilled writer.  If you ask me, she created the Erotic Urban Fantasy genre, all by herself, and since then, gazillions of aspiring perverts have been clamoring to write similar material.

I am one of those perverts.

By the end, I felt much better about the flow of the story, the intensity.  It wrapped up pretty well.  I felt like the boring restaurant flirt scene, for which the book was named, had some meaning.  You see, Anita is one of those people who doesn't play games.  Her world is always about power – who has more – who isn't powerful enough, power alliances, keeping powerful enemies within your sights, and keeping a pile of guns and knives close at hand (strapped to various parts of her anatomy).  Playing flirtatious games just isn't her reality.  She raises the dead for a living, she is a US Marshall called upon to hunt rogue vampires and weres, she just doesn't have that light, flippant flirtatious kind of personality.

And here, in FLIRT, the one time she experiments with being a flirt, she almost gets the poor waiter killed, because her enemies targeted him along with all the other men in her life.

Beyond that little drama, we caught a glimpse into a moment when Anita had to make a fairly difficult, immoral decision, in order to save the lives of everyone she loved (many, many different men).  Anita chose to enslave a man completely, to claim ownership of his soul.  She turned a man into a puppy dog that would follow her to the grave and sit and beg for scraps till the end of his days, because he knows nothing but love for his master.

That was kinda shitty, but, she had to do it.

Though this is not one of her best books, not by far, and though the $10 cover art budget sucks balls, I still enjoyed the book and saw a glimpse of the deeper meaning that Laurell K. Hamilton strives to bring forth from her twisted tales.

So, I give it a solid four stars  ★★★★

BLOOD SLAVE ~ Holiday Party Blog Tour & #Giveaway #Paranormal #Romance #Nov #ASMSG

Blood Slave by Travis Luedke

Description:

"The Nightlife Series is violent, sexy, and occasionally violently sexy.

Her mother named her Esperanza Salvación – Hope for Salvation. But when a girl works as an escort for Colombian cartel in the ghettos of Spanish Harlem, there wasn’t much hope, or salvation.

Hope’s telepathic ability keeps her a step ahead of ruin, but her unusual gift attracts the attention of a psychotic vampire bitch. Trapped in a Manhattan penthouse with the psycho, she thought she was dead meat.

Her survival lies in the hands of Vampire Master Enrique. He seems to respect her, perhaps even care. As a measure of protection, he makes her his personal Bloodslave. Helplessly addicted to his bite, Enrique rules her every moment. As always, Hope must adapt to survive.

Swept into the decadent nightlife of Manhattan's elite, she falls in love with Enrique and prays someday he may grow to love her, too. But is it simply a relationship of convenience? Is she nothing more than a concubine desperate to satisfy his nightly demands for blood and sex?

And forever in the background is the fear that one day the cartel boss she abandoned will hunt her down to collect on old debts.

˃˃˃ “Fast paced, no holds-barred, gripping, gut-wrenching, soul-ripping and most definitely tear-inducing. Perfection!”

˃˃˃ “Travis Luedke writes amazing characters and amazing stories and unbelievable passion flawlessly. After reading this book I was left in shock.”

˃˃˃ “You know when you see a violent or bloody scene in a movie and you cover your eyes for a couple of seconds until it has past? I caught myself doing that with this book, then I realized that the lines were not going to go away until I read them.”

Find out what happens to Hope as a BLOOD SLAVE...bite into your copy today!

Excerpt:

Hope, a telepath, is a Colombian escort, living in the ghettos of Spanish Harlem.  She just finished having sex with her client, an Asian woman named Lia.

I pulled my hand out with a wet “plop” sound and a grunt from Lia.  She had wet my whole forearm.  She’s one of those women who squirt, like the ones in porn films.  The smell of our sex permeated the room.  As I walked to the bathroom to wash up, I passed by the mirror and stopped in shock.  A thin line of blood ran down my neck.

“You bit me!  Look at that!”  I pointed at myself in the mirror.  “That is so gross!”

I freaked and ran to the bathroom.  I could feel the warm blood running down my shoulder onto my breast.  “Shit!”  I rummaged through the medicine cabinet for the hydrogen peroxide.

I found it and the triple antibiotic with shaking hands.  Who knows where her mouth had been today, she was eating me out a few minutes ago.

Before I could begin to wipe up the blood she was on me.  “Wait.  Let me take care of it.  It’s my mess, I’ll clean it up.”

Then her slimy wet eel tongue snaked out and licked from my breast all the way up to my neck.  The girl had skills with that tongue.  She could take that tongue on the road and make some serious money in a carnival freak show.

Then it hit me and turned my stomach over in flip flops.  She actually licked up my blood.  And I read it there in her mind plain as can be.  She loved it.  I tasted like a syrup-covered ice cream cone to her.  She’d happily lick me all night long if I let her, as long as I kept on bleeding.

“Eww!  Gross!  Oh god, that’s so nasty!”

I almost lost it right there.  I actually gagged for a second, barely swallowed it down.  I kinda have this obsessive-compulsive thing about cleanliness, and blood is definitely unclean in my book.  Blood borne pathogens.  Diseases of the blood.  Hospitals treat it like a damn biohazard.

Lia snickered at my gross-out reaction, like it was all some joke.  But she couldn’t hide the fact she wanted more.  The freak actually thought she was a vampire.

Then she got really weird.  She stared intensely without blinking.  I sensed her trying to somehow take control of me with her creepy stare.  The chick was odd, a little too much for my tastes.  The sex was fabulous, but I couldn’t deal with the blood thing.  Just straight up sick.  I may be an escort from a third world country, but I do have standards.

She kept staring at me, had been staring at me for some time.  Then she spoke in a commanding monotone, “Tell me your name.”

The sad truth is I didn’t really want her to be a stranger.  As odd as it sounds, I wanted her to come back, and not for the generous tip.  I wanted more of those screaming orgasms.  I’m not normally a screamer, but she had a way of bringing it out of me.

So, against my better judgment, ignoring the creepy aspects of everything that had gone down so far, I gave her what she wanted.  “My name is Hope.”

I have never told anyone in America my real name.  Esperanza Salvación just sounds so south-of-the-border.  ‘Hope’ has a nice ring to it, one syllable.  I delude myself into believing that if I can drop my Colombian accent, employ flawless English and use the name Hope, I can somehow rise above my humble beginnings.

Lia started in on me with that eerie command voice.  “Hope, you will not remember our meeting or this conversation.  You’re feeling tired.  You feel like sleeping.  You need to rest.”

This shit was getting old fast.  “I get it.  You don’t need to repeat yourself.  I’m not stupid.  I’ve been doing this a long time.  I know the score.  I’ll never tell anyone you were here.  We’ve never met before, yada, yada, yada.  I know the routine.”

Lia didn’t care for my attitude.  She came at me again with that same monotone crap.  “You will not remember our meeting.  We have never met before.  You will not remember that I bit you and tasted your blood.”

“Whatever.  It was gross.  But don’t worry about it.  I’m not gonna say anything to anybody.  It didn’t happen.  This is our little secret.  I respect your privacy.  Actually … I was hoping you might want to see me again …”

I’d given this speech to dozens of cops, business men, politicians, even a priest.  Everyone who’s someone of importance out in the community needs reassurance their freaky romp with an escort will remain confidential.  I’m not into blackmail or extortion or anything stupid like that.  It’s nasty business that never ends well.  I have seen it done by the cartel to others less fortunate.  Plus, being illegal, it wouldn’t be hard to get me deported.

She did not look pleased.  I tried to put her at ease.  “You already gave me a two hundred dollar tip, so I’m cool.  And I really would like to see you again …”

She started looking at me funny, her head turned sideways, like I was the freak.  I dug into her mind to see what the hell.  She’d become extremely irritated over something.

“You’re a special kind of girl, aren’t you?”

She was trying to defocus her vision to see something else, off to the side of my head.  Some kind of hazy color spectrum.

“Yes you are …”  Her voice trailed off.  She flipped like that into a raging-bull hatred.  She pegged me with this totally wicked I-want-to-kill-you-and-dance-on-your-corpse look.  “You Bitch!  You’re digging around in my head, you bitch!”

I caught it a split second before she hit me, and I reacted.  I flinched away, stepped back out of her reach, except she hadn’t moved.

“Gotcha, didn’t I?  I knew it.”  Her lip curled into a snarl.

“What?  What’s your problem?”

Then I finally understood.  She had been trying to hypnotize me into ignorance.  When she realized it wasn’t working, she began to suspect I had some kind of psychic sensitivity, a telepath, or clairvoyant.  I had just proven her right by reacting to her thoughts rather than her actions.

Staring at me with her head cocked sideways, she recognized something about this weird color she thought she could see, something yellow-gold in my aura.  That decided it for her.

“You already know way too much about me don’t you.”  She had this half-smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.  But I think it’s time you should go.”

I presented a dilemma.  If I couldn’t be hypnotized into forgetting, and I had read her mind, what to do with me?  The thought came to her instantly.  A toothy grin slid across her face.  She would probably have to kill me to contain the situation.
