A new Emagazine is born! Awesome Indie reviews, articles, and freebies! #ASMSG

After beating my head against the wall with Wordpress for a day, only to have the damn website suspended, I went back to my old favorite, Blogger, and created an awesomesauce Emagazine.

Its robo-post madness.  30+ blogs, with RSS feeds autoposting into an emagazine of Epic proportions.

Did I mention it was Epic?

And the view is customizeable!

I haven't given up on Wordpress, but, at least I have something to show for my hours and hours of work.

Wordpress has a not-so-friendly TOS when it comes to auto-reblogging software. They forced me to self-host. So, I'll be bringing you some new stuff on my new self-hosted Wordpress blog/emagazine....eventually.

THE CLEARING ~ Classic Werewolf Horror #Paranormal #Baddassary #Oct #ASMSG

Tired of the same old werewolf-shifter slut-screws-the-wolf-pack cliche?

How about a refreshingly horrific take on the werewolf genre:

THE CLEARING

by THOMAS RYDDER

Genre: PARANORMAL THRILLER/URBAN FANTASY

DESCRIPTION

After twenty years in the Marine Corps, Major Frank Cutlip comes home to the quiet hills of his beloved Pennsylvania to take up a new life as the sheriff of Allegheny County.

Professor Beth Lowe took up a post at Paxton University because she became enamored with western Pennsylvania’s charms, a more enduring love than she thought she would ever feel for a man.

When Beth’s dog is savaged by wolves, their peaceful lives are shattered, and their fates entwined. On the brink of death, the dog not only survives but grows larger… and more vicious. A thousand-year cycle of carnage is reaching its climax once more, and the peaceful wooded hills will soon be smeared with blood.

Sheriff Cutlip leads his community in a hunt for the hidden terror, but then his own brother is bitten, his blood corrupted by the ancient evil. The sheriff must confront terrible choices, and he can’t do so alone.

‘The Clearing’ — a novel of ordinary people thrown together in extraordinary circumstances.

REVIEW  ★★★★★

Escaping his own personal tragedy of a divorce, Sheriff Cutlip has built an easy life in a sleepy Pennsylvania mountain county.  He likes it that way, simple, uncomplicated, which is why he took the job.

All that changes in the span of a few weeks.

Beth Lowe lives out at the edge of the forest covered mountains,  raising her niece as a daughter after the death of Beth's sister and husband.  Beth's quiet existence is shattered by the presence of an ancient, monstrous evil.

Her dog has been attacked, and within hours, days, it begins to change into something large and vicious.

In the hunt for these elusive beasts in the forest, Sheriff Cutlip's brother is attacked, bitten severely.

What began as a simple threat to livestock, becomes an intensely personal battle for survival of their community.

THE CLEARING harkens back to the good ole days of classic horror, where werewolves slaughter men who stand in their way.  Something reminiscent of The Howling or American Werewolf in London.

You won't find any muscle-bound shifters dragging women off to the wolf pack gang-bang, but you will find a well written thriller with true-to-life characters facing horrific circumstances.

Thomas Rydder Bio

I was born in 1957 in a small town in Western Pennsylvania that had - and still has - one traffic light. There wasn't a whole lot to do there, and we had few neighbors, so I learned to play quite a bit of make-believe - soldiers, cowboys and Indians, that kind of thing. At the same time, I loved to read and watch old movies. On Saturdays, my dad played in a country western band, and I stayed up to wait for him. It was during that stretch that I discovered the horror movie. You know the ones I mean. Karloff, Chaney, Lee. The masters, right?

Fast forward 40 years. I'm now the project manager for a small civil engineering firm in picturesque Charleston, South Carolina with my lovely wife and four rescue pets, two dogs, two cats. Oh - and eight feral cats outside that put up with us because we give them two squares a day.

Anyway, since childhood, I've loved to create. I played trumpet, sang, even dabbled in genealogy. Nothing quite did it for me. Over the years, I'd composed quite a few term papers and theses (there are a few ex-teenagers in this world who owe their English grades to yours truly), and unfailingly earned an "A". My wife knew this, and one day just suggested that I try writing.

What the hey, I thought. So I sat down and found a writing site called Hubpages. Nice little site, and I started getting the basics of writing a little from some of the inhabitants. I wrote a short story, and everyone liked it. So, I wrote another one. Except it kept growing, and I kept getting more ideas, and it lengthened to 20 thousand words, then 30, then 40. By the time I sat back, I had the rough draft of my first novel, except back then it was called "Werewolves and Flapjacks". Somewhere along the way I decided to submit my work (now called "The Clearing) to three publishers. I was turned down twice, and miraculously was accepted by the gentleman who gently rules this site, Mr. Tim Taylor. And the rest, as they say, is history. By the way, you need to like Tim...he's a great guy, and I owe him much, which can never be repaid.

I now have a second book availabe - “Restless Souls: 3 dark fables” - an anthology (novella and two short stories) of ghost stories, and life is grand.

Even though I make wise cracks about all of it, this is all like living a dream - and I don't plan on waking up for a very long time.

I have a wonderful cover artist:

http://amygdaladesign.net/

She's highly talented and very fast, efficient, and professional. She did all three of these covers in two days!  If she wasn't all the way over in Europe, I would track her down and kiss her!

My problem?   I can't decide which of the three covers is the best one.  They are all so damn awesome.

HELP ME DECIDE!  Please vote for one of these three covers on my Goodreads poll:

Adventures in ebook cover art--Part 3

If you're wanting to get up to speed on parts 1 & 2 of this series of posts on my adventures in ebook cover artistry check these out real quick:

http://thenightlifeseries.blogspot.com/2012/08/adventures-in-ebook-cover-artistry.html

http://thenightlifeseries.blogspot.com/2012/10/adventures-in-ebook-cover-artistry-part.html

In the above-mentioned posts, I have expounded greatly on the merits of hiring freelance cover artists, freelance artists, and freelance digital graphics designers through freelanced.com.  That's all fine and dandy, but it can be a time consuming pain in the ass.  If you want a quick and professional ebook cover, and you're willing to go with an artist's vision rather than your own design, consider exploring the wonderful world of PRE-MADE COVERS.

There's a whole bunch of affordable, high-quality ebook covers to be had if you spend some time hunting for them.  I spend far too much time doing just that.  But it paid off.  I found the cover I needed and wanted, and it was ready to go.  All they had to do was add a little blood.  No cover of the Nightlife Series is ever complete without a little blood.

Now I thought this was gorgeous, a real eye magnet.  Beyond the obvious aesthetics of the image, the woman actually looks like the Main Character in my novel, as I envisioned her.  I didn't have to compromise my standards and preference of design to go with this cover.  It pretty much fit my needs perfectly. This was the MOST AFFORDABLE cover I have ever purchased, $60.00.  I probably would've paid double that for this image because it fit my needs so well, and it looks awesome.  (Don't tell my cover artist)

Who did this wonderful cover? Amygdala Design.  She has numerous PRE-MADE COVERS available on her site for $60.  Her custom design services start at $150.00.  At this level of quality, you cannot complain about those prices.  I have seen cover artists charge much more for this quality of work. Here's the full URL of her site if you want to check her out:

http://amygdaladesign.net/

Have I forsaken my days of hiring freelancers to get the quality of cover art I want at my price?  Not necessarily.   But I will definitely consider Amygdala Design for the next cover art project I have coming up.   Definitely.

Until next time.

Adventures in ebook cover art--Part 2

Quality ebook cover art is hard to come by for less than $150-$400.  But it can be done, consistently, if you do what I do. I hire freelance artists/graphic-designers, at the price I'm willing to pay, to make a cover based on my own design concepts. See the first post on adventures in cover artistry: http://thenightlifeseries.blogspot.com/2012/08/adventures-in-ebook-cover-artistry.html

Here's where I go for my ebook cover artists:

http://www.freelanced.com/

Initially, I found a buttload of talented artists working in illustration and graphics design when I posted my ebook cover art job.  Fifty different artists applied for the job.  It was difficult to choose just one.  After going through this process several times, hiring artists and working through multiple mockups-proofs, I settled on the "prove you're the one" method.

The problem with artists is they usually have a day job.  They do this graphic design stuff on the side.  Finding time to do what I want at the price I'm willing to pay is an issue.

Sure, if I wished to throw hundreds of dollars at an artist, they'd drop everything and have my work done in two days.  But I'm kinda cheap.  That's what my wife says.

I sorted through many an artist who took a week or more getting back to me by email in order to find those who respond immediately and get the work done in days rather than weeks.  Its no surprise that the artists who run full a time graphic design business are the most prompt and professional.  Its their bread and butter to do this stuff.

Lisa Strong is the latest graphic designer I hired.  She's awesome on timeliness, professionalism, and she does as many modifications and proofs as necessary to reach a finished product you're happy with:

http://www.freelanced.com/lisastrong

Here's the cover for "The Nightlife Las Vegas" she finished in five days.  Two of those days I wasted in not getting back to her on my opinion of the initial proof work.

The trick to a good cover is the K.I.S.S. principle, Keep It Simple Stupid.  Everything on your cover must be recognizable from a thumbnail image.  Most ebook shoppers will never see more than a thumbnail image of your ebook until they click on it.  Your ebook better be one cool-ass lookin' thumbnail, especially if you're an unknown Indie author.  Us Indies are always judged by our covers, initially.

This cover by Lisa Strong, has a wonderful thumbnail appeal.  Everyone can see the elegant bright white fonts and the blood splattered Las Vegas sign. Simple. Colorful. Grabs the eye. The concepts embodied in this cover are effectively communicated at both thumbnail and full size.

Give Lisa a shot.  If you're not getting what you want on an ebook cover design, perhaps you need to provide better tools and references for what you want.  I scoured the web for imagery and tools to give to Lisa. I provided her with a set of Photoshop blood splatter tools for use on my covers, along with the sign image.

Make your cover artist's job easy, and you will get what you want.

Stay tuned for my next blog post detailing the various stages of development working through several artists on "The Nightlife Las Vegas" cover.

Adventures in ebook cover artistry

I am not an artist.

But I had aspirations as a teenager:  dragons, medieval fantasy stuff, creepy guys with fangs, 80's rocker dudes with battle axes and swords ... Nothing I would ever consider putting on the cover of my self-published ebooks.

Needless to say, I have decided to hire cover artists.  And just how does one go about hiring cover artists?  I began my journey down this road without a clue.

As most business begins in this day and age, I started with Google.  Anything I want to know I just Google it, don't we all?  The trick is asking the right question, its like a backwards game of Jeopardy.

In my searches for cover art/artists, I came across many resources, a few of which I will name here.  Mark Coker of Smashwords.com, the largest Indie ebook publishing outfit on the web outside of Amazon, has a list of cover artists he will promptly email upon request. I looked at that list, and I checked out various websites of the cover artists showcasing portfolios of their work.

I don't want to bash too hard on other people's cover art, but I was not very impressed with about 90% of it.  I've been browsing through book covers for several months now, and there are literally about one in a hundred book covers that I thought looked professional or even decent.  I guess its all in the eye of the beholder.  My eye for cover art is jaded.

Later in my searches I found a great source for award winning cover art:  http://www.thebookdesigner.com/2012/06/e-book-cover-design-awards-may-2012/
Those are some very good covers, and it stands to reason those artists would produce quality products for me as well .... but at what price?

The one place I found immediately when I searched for freelance artists or artists-for-hire is http://www.freelanced.com/.  Its the best resource for freelance artists I've ever seen.  In minutes I was able to post my Job at the price I was willing to pay, and real live artists began applying for the Job. It is sooo EFFIN awesome to have a whole swarm of artists willing to do the job you want at the price you name.  And there are some extremely talented artists on freelanced.

Like many things in life, I think it follows the 80/20 rule.  About 80% of the artists are mediocre and then there's the 20% that are fantastic.   Some of these artists will do a quick mockup of your concept.  You can have a free demonstration of how your cover ideas come to life with an artist's particular flare.  That is soooo cool.  Its polar ice cap -120° F cool.  Its cooler than a witches tit in a brass bra.

Of course, not all the artists want to give their valuable time for a free mockup.  Some of the very best artists, the ones who have gallery quality art, are the ones who'll tell you their portfolio speaks for itself (and it does).  So either you take a chance on a high quality artist without a mockup, or you work with a good-to-high quality artist who's not above spending a little time convincing you they're the one for the job.

I chose the latter every time.  There's just something about getting a good looking mockup of your desired cover that sinks home the sale.  The guys I hired didn't necessarily have the best portfolio, but they put forward their best efforts to prove they were good enough for my needs.  They also happened to be in the business of doing cover art, they know what's expected.

I have found many cover artists I would like to hire, but so far I could only afford the two:

Diogo Lando from portugal, http://www.freelanced.com/diogolando

Joshua Allen from the good ole USA, http://www.freelanced.com/joshuamallen

You can see the process as it evolved proof by proof with each cover.  There are numerous samples of cover art proofs and mockups done by artists in my site http://www.twluedke.com/

The question that should be prominent in your mind by now is how much did I pay for my covers?

Not a penny more than what I posted on freelanced:  $75.00 each ($150 total for the two).  These artists did multiple proofs and changes I asked for.  They both finished the job within two weeks from the date I hired them.

Maybe you think my covers aren't all that.  So what.  I think they look better than 90% of what's out there in the self-publishing arena. If you think my covers look pretty good, then follow these tidbits of advice I have gleaned through experience:

1.  Give the artist some room to work-in their particular flair or style, I tend to like artists with styles that are slightly abstract, it shows me they have a unique way of looking at the world.
2.  Give detailed, clear and concise descriptions of what you have in mind.  The clearer you can paint a picture for the artist, the better they will be able to produce what you want.  Provide any examples you can find from imagery on the web to give the artist something to go on (Google images or stock photos or whatever).
3.  Work only with artists who communicate quickly and effectively,  if it takes them 4-5 days to respond to an email then they don't want your business that badly.
4.  Make sure you're getting the right dimensions for your final product.  Get educated on what cover art pixel requirements are for the various ebook vendors:

http://stuartaken.blogspot.com/2012/06/new-ebook-cover-requirements-for-high.html

I wish you all the best of luck with your cover art.  Don't settle for good enough, go for the best.  If you take a little time and shop around you can find it at a reasonable price.
